Can we enjoy an egg-cellent Easter with all the sweets and chocolates whilst caring for our teeth?

Easter is such an amazing time: There is a long weekend, school holidays, and so much delectable food, drinks and most of all, chocolate.

So here are some tips and tricks to help you keep your teeth safe from sweets.

There are many theories and ideas around the origins of Easter eggs and the internet has resources galore on those topics that you can look at. So we won’t bore you with all those details.

We’ll get right to how to enjoy those delicious treats and keep your teeth as safe as possible at the same time.

We all love to eat sweets, (including dentists); chocolate, lollies, toffees, cookies, you name it.

The foundations for saving your teeth through festive times, come on all the other days of the year. Brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing everyday, drinking plenty of water, eating a balanced and healthy diet as well as visiting your dentist regularly, will keep teeth and gums healthy.

The following tips can be used on all days, not just Easter, to enjoy those special treats and save your teeth.

• Don’t snack and avoid sipping on soft drinks or juices throughout the day
• Eat sweets and treats with a meal so that your mouth is ready to produce saliva to help neutralise acids
• Rinse your mouth with water or drink plenty of water after consuming sugary foods
• Chewing sugar-free gum can help produce saliva that helps neutralise acids
• Check the nutritional label on food products. Minimise foods that have sugar in the top few ingredients or have high sugar levels per 100gm/ml.
• Use other forms of treats rather than sweets and lollies
